You'll need to file a tax return if:

- you were self-employed

- you got £2,500 or more in untaxed income

- your income from savings or investments was £10,000 or more before tax

- your income from dividends from shares was £10,000 or more before tax

- you made profits from selling things like shares, a second home or other chargeable assets and need to pay capital gains tax

- you were a company director - unless it was for a non-profit organisation (such as a charity) and you didn’t get any pay or benefits, like a company car

- your income (or your partner’s) was over £50,000 and one of you claimed child benefit

- you had income from abroad that you needed to pay tax on

- you lived abroad and had a UK income

- your taxable income was over £100,000

- you were a trustee of a trust or registered pension scheme

- you had a P800 from HMRC saying you didn’t pay enough tax last year - and you didn’t pay what you owe through your tax code or with a voluntary payment

- your State Pension was more than your personal allowance and was your only source of income - unless you started getting your pension on or after 6 April 2016.

Certain other people may need to send a return (for example ministers of religion or Lloyd’s underwriters) - you can check whether you need to. You usually won’t need to send a return if your only income is from your wages or pension.

If you cannot pay your tax on time, you may be able to arrange to pay your self-assessment tax liability in instalments. To do this you should contact HM Revenue & Customs on the Business Payment Support Service on 0300 200 3835 or arrange to pay in instalments via your Government Gateway account.

Self-assessment tax returns are due by 31 January following the end of the tax year if you are submitting the tax return electronically, or 31 October if you are submitting a paper tax return.

Late filing penalties do indeed apply for self assessment tax returns so it's important that you work with a certified accountant to ensure you are not late. There is a £100 penalty immediately after the due date for filing (even if there is no tax to pay or the tax due has already been paid). The full penalty of £100 will always be due if your return is filed late even if there is no tax outstanding.

Additional penalties can be charged as follows:

• over 3 months late – a £10 daily penalty up to a maximum of £900
• over 6 months late – an additional £300 or 5% of the tax due if higher
• over 12 months late – a further £300 or a further 5% of the tax due if higher. In particularly serious cases there is a penalty of up to 100% of the tax due.

You'll need your UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) number and National Insurance Number in order to file a return. You'll also need to send us your financial information such as your bank statements, invoices, details of other income (dividends/interest) and expenses. We will send you a full list so you know exactly what we require which will ensure we can turnaround your self assessment tax return in a reasonable timeframe. If you are using software such as Freeagent, Quickbooks, Sage or Xero, you can provide access to us.

You can register on GOV.UK. During registration, you’ll be given a User ID and will be asked to choose a password - naturally, you’ll need these when you login again.

HMRC will then send you an activation code by text. Once you’ve activated the service, you can fill in a self assessment tax return.
